Malignant liver tumors in children
In the youngest children, infants and toddlers, most malignant tumors are hepatoblastomas and present with an asymptomatic right upper quadrant or epigastric abdominal mass. Rarely hepatoblastoma may present with abdominal pain and hemorrhage after post-traumatic or “spontaneous” rupture of a previously occult tumor. Nonspecific symptoms of inanition or respiratory failure may appear insidiously as the disease enters its advanced stages. Symptoms are more common in older children in whom the
Benign liver tumors
There is a remarkable diversity of conditions encompassed by benign liver masses in children [44]. Table 1. The most common benign hepatic tumor in infants is a congenital form of hepatic hemangioma. Commonly seen benign tumors in toddlers are mesenchymal hamartoma and focal nodular hyperplasia. Hepatic adenoma is almost exclusively a disease of older children; primary hepatic teratoma is exceedingly rare. There are several distinguishing characteristics of these benign tumors on radiographic
